You never know how long your life on this earth will last, and one of the first chilling stories to emerge from this devastating Colorado movie shooting tragedy was that of Jessica Ghawi, a young aspiring sportscaster, who was killed when 24-year-old James Holmes burst into the Aurora theatre early Friday morning and methodically began shooting patrons, killing at least 12 and injuring at least 50. Ghawi had recently moved from San Antonio, Texas, to Denver, and had narrowly escaped a June 2 shoot-out at a Toronto food court that killed one person. At that time, she reflected on how lucky she was and how fragile life is in a blog post about the attack. “I found out after seeing a map of the scene that minutes later a man was standing in the same spot where I just ate, and opened fire in the food court full of people. … I would’ve been in the same place where one of the victims was found,” Ghawi wrote. “I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders’ faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don’t know when or where our time on Earth will end, when or where we will breathe our last breath. For one man, it was in the middle of a busy food court on a Saturday evening,” she wrote. And now Jessica is gone just over a month later in an inexplicable similar circumstance.
