Monday Morning, December 17th! 3 months ago today was my last radio show on the air, so what's going on next? Plus, how you can get drivers license info about anyone! "PHOTO GALLERY" - Trumpeter Chris Botti, Comedian Jamie Kennedy, and Playboy Playmate Cindy Margolis!

Hard to believe, but 3 months have passed since my last show on the air, and in some ways it seems like forever, but on other days, it's gone by really fast! So what's next for me. My contract with Clear Channel is over December 31st, and all indications are they have nothing to offer me locally. There is a possible national situation that could develop with them after the first of the year, but that would be a new deal entirely. Syndication and Satellite could be other opportunities for me, but my first priority will be getting back on the air locally. My agent and I will talk to several stations about that possiblity.

A radio friend of mine from across the country called me yesterday because he had run into one of the national Clear Channel executives who expressed how surprised and upset he was that locally, they had chosen me as one of the many employees who has been released the past few months. My friend got the impression that the executive himself expected this might be his last year with the company.

We went on to talk about the business of broadcasting and how most of the TV and print ads no longer depict people listening to the radio, but rather with a couple of white wires hanging out of their ears, and you know what that means.....ipod! It seems to me if we are going to compete with all the new media, from Satellite to ipods and all the other mp3 players, podcasts, YouTube, to even newer time shifting devices not only for TV but for radio too, and of course the internet itself, you've got to have radio "PERSONALITIES" on the air, music alone won't do it because as you've indicated by so many emails, you-the listener, can now download and customize all the new and old music you want on so many devices, why depend on radio for it?

The internet itself outbilled radio in advertising dollars for the first time this past year, with that online figure expected to double over the next 3 years, while little growth is expected for radio. In 2011 some analysts are saying internet ad dollars could total $44 billion, while radio figures will be just half of that. My website that I've been working on here with my son Bryan is getting ready for the future. Once internet radio becomes available in cars in the next decade, all bets are off.

I like to think one of the reasons I've lasted 40 years in the most competitve radio market in the world is because I've continued to evolve, not only with the technology of our business, but also with the material in my shows...I don't do the same old bits and features of 10, 20 or 30 years ago that I did then, because your tastes keep changing too. Some of you still want to hear "The Morning Wake-Up Story", "The Breakfast Serial", or "This Date in History", but hopefully I've plugged in new benchmarks that you appreciate even more. The last couple of years "The Actors Studio" with the resulting DVD giveaways seems to be one of the most popular, and I've tried to keep the daily regular bits to a minimum too, because too much predictability becomes boring....and believe me, I've heard a lot of it listening to radio the past few months.

So you get the idea I'm a little "hungry" to get back on the air? I am, but thanks to you and all your emails and feedback, it's been the next best thing on this website, which I will continue, whatever station I wind up with. It's always tough to talk on the phone with you for any length of time when I am on the air doing my show (I do answer my own phones when I'm working, always have), because there's a lot of business going on off the air that you never see or hear, but with emails you and I can present an unlimited amount of information. So please continue to send them with whatever is on your mind.

In today's "BUZZ", one of those artists I've played thousands of times in my career, Dan Fogelberg, died yesterday. There's a link to his website and a final letter from him for his fans. Lots of celebrity new baby news, Will Smith huge at the movie boxoffice this past weekend, a couple of pictures today are worth more than a thousand words (see, you can't show those on the radio: advantage-internet), and the latest Lindsay-Britney link.
"CLIPS" has snippets of the 5 most played Christmas songs. "GALLERY" has pics of Comedian Jamie Kennedy who had a crush on one of my interns at the time, Katie Couric's favorite trumpet player-Chris Botti, and the most downloaded woman on the internet, Playboy's Cindy Margolis. And the most important link to me "TALKBACK", some more radio reviews from you listeners. Keep 'em coming!

Finally today, did you know people can actually find your driver's license data online?
Check it out for yourself, here's the link to the information on anyone.

Friday Morning, December 14th! Everyone's talking about Baseball's Steroid Scandal today, but what do steroids do to you.....I got 10 reasons you don't want to take them.

It was baseball's darkest day yesterday since the Black Sox scandal when Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven others on the 1919 Chicago White Sox were charged with conspiring to throw the World Series against Cincinnati. They later became known as the "Black Sox" and were banned from baseball for life by the game's first commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

A lot of players on that Sox team were angry at tightfisted owner Charles Comiskey. That made them ripe targets for opportunistic gamblers looking to fix the Series. The plot was soon exposed and, within a year, a grand jury was investigating with eight players indicted, then suspended by Comiskey. In June 1921 the players were found innocent in court - but not by baseball. Landis, hired to clean up the game, barred all eight for life. The story was first featured in a 1963 book and then the 1988 movie "Eight Men Out".

Now in the very competitive athletic world with players looking for that extra edge, steroids and Human Growth Hormone suddenly have become part of our vocabulary over the last few years, but what happens when you take steroids....besides the extraordinary sports records we've seen set recently.

1. If you take steroids you still have to work out to get a buff body - they are not a "bod in a bottle".

2. Steroids cause terrible acne and acne scarring, not to mention the dreaded "backne" (acne on the back).

3. "Roid Rage" exists and is scary not only for the anger recipient, but also for the person having the rage.

4. Steroid use in teens can stunt normal growth and development.

5. Steroid use can cause hair loss, excessive acne, formation of "mini breasts" or extra tissue around the nipples, impotency, penile shrinking and low to no sperm production in teen aged boys - many of these effects are irreversible.

6. Steroid use can cause facial hair, deepening of the voice, clitoral enlargement, breast shrinkage, hair loss, and menstrual irregularities in teen aged girls - many of these effects are irreversible.

7. Steroids cause liver damage, jaundice, high blood pressure, severe acne, trembling, heart arhythmia and inability to properly regulate body temperature.

8. There are withdrawl symptoms involved in quitting steroids including illness, dizziness, vision problems, anxiety, depression and tremors.

9. Steroids cause behavioral abnormalities like excessive anger, paranoia, ego centricity, frustration, mistrust and aggression and these changes can last even after the steroid use has stopped.

10. Steroid use robs you of the satisfaction of succeeding on your own athletic merits.

77 players were named yesterday in the investigation. The full story is on today's "BUZZ" link!

Thursday Morning, December 13th! Watch out for the holiday scammers that are out there, and how you can get the perfect Christmas gift for that special someone, A SONG! "PHOTO GALLERY" - Poppy Montgomery - "Without A Trace" & The Solid Gold Dancers!

These days there are all sorts of scams on websites, emails and regular mail, but even more around the holidays, so take a look at this list released by Consumer Affairs, the most devious scams of 2007.

1) Come New Year's, lots of folks resolve to lose weight, making them ripe for Consumer Affair's top scam of 2007: weight loss gimmicks.

Scam No. 2 is the work at home scam. The so-called company that hires you requires you to pay a fee up front. But the problem is that the job never existed.

No. 3: The fake, foreign lottery scam.

No. 4 is the CraigsList.com scam, where someone takes out a bogus classified ad, sometimes to sell a puppy. Al they ask for is a shipping fee, but don't fall for it.

No. 5: The computer layaway scam. You end up paying a company thousands of dollars over time for an old personal computer worth only a few hundred bucks.

No. 6: "We'll buy your home" scam. It's when companies pretend to rescue you from foreclosure.

No. 7: IRS "phishing scams" or bogus e-mails claiming to be from the IRS.

No. 8 is the "unauthorized billing scams."

No. 9: The "military spouse scam," where someone pretends to be from the Red Cross, claiming your loved one was hurt in combat.

No. 10: The "e-greeting card scam," when someone e-mails you a card with a computer virus.

The Annual Barney-Cam video from the White House has been released! Take a look!

Here's another dog story. How much do you love your pooch? A house has been painted black and white in memory of the homeowner's Dalmatian named Bingo. Their dog died after being hit by a car. The British couple wanted to let everyone know how much they loved Bingo.

Wednesday Morning, December 12th! I've got a snowball with your name on it today, plus random thoughts from a holiday mind and a picture kids shouldn't see, especially now! "Photo Gallery" - James Denton, Comedian Gabriel Iglesias, and Singer Katrina Carlson!

That brings back a lot of memories of growing up in Nebraska, building snow forts and snowball fights, and making the biggest snowball you could until you couldn't roll it any further because it was so huge!

A little advice for the office today, from a study done by McGill University in Montreal. Avoid touchy topics on Wednesdays. People are most quarrelsome today. On the other hand, Thursdays are the day that people are most agreeable. So schedule your meetings or ask for favors then.

Here's some more of those random thoughts from a holiday mind.....

* The first man to land on the moon was Neil Armstrong. Spelled backward, you get "Gnorts, Mr. Alien." Therefore, it may be assumed that the proper greeting when meeting any alien is "Gnorts."

* According to tests, just sitting around thinking about your muscles can pump you up and make you stronger. (Go ahead, think about it!)

* The scent of a grapefruit is said to make middle aged women appear to be six years younger in men's eyes. ("Honey, we're having grapefruit for dinner again?")

* Why does round pizza come in a square box, or for that matter, since bread is square, why is sandwich meat always round? (Same reason you're IN a movie, but ON TV probably)

* One square mile of sunshine weighs 2-1/2 pounds. (And you thought it was holiday weight gain when you looked at the scale this morning)

* Diamonds are flammable. (They can burn a hole in your wallet for one thing)

* Your hearing becomes less sharp after eating too much. (what?...what?....Oh sure, I'll have another helping of that)

* If a 911 operator has a heart attack, who do they call? (Well.......?)

* Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
(Anything I could add here would be much too graphic)

* There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal out of your birthday. That time is age eleven.

And a final note, a picture that no child should ever be allowed to see, especially now.

Today in the "BUZZ" link, Britney's testifying, Alex Trebek is recovering, Jessica Simpson may take it all off, JLO expecting TWINS maybe, and a clip of Led Zeppelin at their concert this past weekend. "TALKBACK" has holiday wishes in some of your latest emails. "CLIPS" has a "live" studio performance from Trans-Siberian Orchestra. and "GALLERY" has photos posted of James Denton from "Desperate Housewives" and his real life wife, Comedian Gabriel Iglesias, and Singer Katrina Carlson. Take a look below at Katrina's video from a few months back that features my voice on the radio at the beginning of it.

Have a great Wednesday!

Tuesday Morning, December 11! Today, Perception is Reality, but wait till you take a look at these optical illusions! You won't believe your eyes! And Mom's here from Nebraska! "Photo Gallery" - Billy Bush "hugging it out" with me, and Lauren Holly clowning around!

Beautiful weather here in Southern California today, but back in the Midwest it's another story! I mention that because my mom flew in yesterday for her annual Christmas visit to spend the holidays here. She literally just escaped an ice and snow storm that hit Nebraska and all of the midwest states, as she was flying out, and then when she changed planes in Denver, her flight sat on the tarmac along with hundreds of other planes for delays up to an hour while they were "de-iced" before take-off! Another 12 hours and she might have been grounded for a couple of days because of the weather. Here's mom last year at the Grove when I introduced her to Supermodel Cheryl Tiegs.

Now, I promised you some mind-blowing optical illusions today. Take a look at these and if they have instructions, do what they tell you for the maximum effect.

On this one, you should see a man's face and also a word...
Hint: Try tilting your head to the right, the word begins with 'L'

Pretty wild, huh? I'll have some more by the end of the week for you. Meanwhile, check out the "CLIPS" link today for my visit with Dr. Elmo a couple of years ago when it was the 25th anniversary of his big Christmas hit "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" hitting the charts! The "BUZZ" link with Will Smith getting his hands and feet in cement at Grauman's just days before his latest movie "I Am Legend" hits theatres. "GALLERY" photos today include Billy Bush and me "hugging it out" and Lauren Holly giving me "rabbit ears" while clowning around. And thank you for the continuing flow of heartfelt emails to the "TALKBACK" link. I love you all!

Monday Morning, December 10th! I know exactly what the weather will be like on Christmas Day! I'll explain, and lots of pictures from yesterday's Southgate Parade! "Photo Gallery" - New pics today- Ashanti, Tom Arnold and Minnie Mouse!

So what's with my prediction of Christmas Day weather 15 days before it happens. Well, if you recall, last week I mentioned that whatever it's like on the day we tape the Southgate Children's Christmas Lane Parade, the weather matches it exactly when the tape is played back on Christmas Day!

So this Christmas, it will be mostly sunny and clear, and high's in the mid 60's! Remember, it even happened a couple of years ago when it rained on the parade, and then sure enough, it rained Christmas Day when the tape was played back on the air, people swore it had to be "live".

Here's some photo highlights of yesterday's 62nd annual Children's Christmas Lane Parade!

Charlie & my co-host for the past 18 years Xiomara Galindo, Parade Producer Bill Lomas!

(Top left)It was a beautiful blue-sky day in Southgate! Temperatures perfect, and just a very light breeze. The best weather we've had in years for the parade. This is the view Xio and have from our booth looking out at the crew, lights and television camera. (Bottom left)Our view from the Parade Broadcast Booth down Tweedy Boulevard in Southgate. The parade will air on Christmas Day, channel and time to be announced in the next week. (Below)A brand new high school band from Romoland's Heritage high school in Riverside County marches in front our TV cameras. Lots of floats in the parade, including the one pictured below with a "live" band. And of course, Santa was there too!

If those pictures don't get you in the mood, check out an animated Santa and his reindeer doing this "Drifters" Classic version of "White Christmas" recorded in 1954.

Tomorrow, some amazing images that will trick your brain into things that aren't really there. Here's a sneak preview of just one of them.

Do you see gray areas in between the squares? Now where did they come from?

Check out my "Clips" today, Scott Baio finally got married over the weekend, and my last conversation with Scott as a single man is posted. You can see a picture of Scott and his new bride on the "BUZZ" link, plus news about another celeb wedding, and one that didn't happen. Britney's in the bad news again (well, when isn't she?), and two great new videos - the new "Sex and The City" movie trailer, and a show-stopping performance by Usher!
"Talkback" has a listener who was part of a radio survey, wait till you read her response!
New "Gallery" photos today-Tom Arnold, Minnie Mouse and Mrs. Claus, and Ashanti!

Hope you have a great start to your week!

Charlie

Friday Morning, December 7th! One of my kids from "Children's Hospital" on TV again, and do you know how many $$$ that cellphone's going to cost you over your lifetime? "PHOTO GALLERY"- New pics - Jason Ritter, Jane Wiedlin (Go-Go's) & Storm Troopers! NEW "MAIN PAGE" FORMAT - The 3 links below now have the latest entries in each one and if you click on any one of those entries, it takes you right to that site!

Well, so much for the big storm that was coming in. Just shows you even with all our high tech instruments, computer projections and 21st century science, we still can't get our weather forecasts right.

Speaking of our modern day age, did you see the news item earlier this week that AT&T is going to be phasing out about a million pay phones over the next year because it just costs too much to maintain them for the fewer and fewer people that use them. Nearly everyone has access to a cell phone instead these days. But...did you realize....

--According to new estimates by CPP Phonesafe, a British insurance company, over the course of your lifetime, you'll spend about $138,000 on cell phones!!! Here's how that breaks down. . .

. . . $95,000 on calls, text messages and data plans.

. . . $29,500 on new phones every year or two.

. . . $11,400 on accessories like headsets, car chargers, and those leather cases they always get you to buy at the cell phone store even though you never use them.

. . . And $2,000 on music, ringtone, game and video downloads.

--If you have a cell phone from age 14 until age 78 (--the average U.S. life expectancy), that comes out to around $2,156-per-year.

--If those numbers seem high, it's because cell phone prices are going to keep going up over your lifetime. . . and because more and more people are getting TWO or even THREE cell phones, which doubles or triples the cost.

--And that $138,000 you spend could have bought a brand new Porsche 911 Turbo instead. But you'd have to stop and use pay phones if you could find any.

Hey, I got a note from the "Ednas"! Edna Montez and her daughter Edna Cerritos, who you'll remember as one of the miracle children from Children's Hospital you met on my Tunathons.

(pictured in front) Edna Cerritos and Mom Edna, (back row left to right) KBIG Program Director Dave "Chachi" Denes, Denise Bayles-Director of the Children's Miracle Network, Charlie.

Young Edna suffered from a brain tumor that had been misdiagnosed by a number of Doctors and Hospitals until Mom Edna decided to take her to Children's Hospital just to be sure, and that's where the Doctor there discovered, after running some tests, that Edna did indeed have a brain tumor which could have killed her eventually.

Earlier this year Edna was chosen as California's Champion Across America by the Children's Miracle Network and gets to visit Disneyworld and the White House to meet the President, and even got to hang out with Paris Hilton during our Tunathon this past summer as Paris donated proceeds from her new clothing line to Children's Hospital.

Yesterday, Edna was in the spotlight again. Now she's being featured on KCAL Channel 9's tech report about The Starlight Foundation's New "Tuttles" Video game. Take a look on the link below.

http://cbs2.com/tech/Video.Games.Tuttles.2.603725.html

Now you know what to buy kids for a great Christmas present that helps kids too!

Have a great weekend, check all the links for fresh new stuff today! "BUZZ" has all your Grammy nominations from yesterday, and George Lopez's opening remarks that got a lot of laughs from the awards crowd, plus a very funny George Clooney video, and wait till you read what celebrities were the biggest sellers on e-bay this past year.

See you at the Children's Christmas Lane Parade in Southgate this Sunday at 1 p.m. I'll have pictures and highlights Monday morning right here.

Thursday Morning, December 6th! A look at the Link Headlines. "NEWS" - Bad news hits close to home, and a Parade Preview "CLIPS" - Christmas is everywhere, even at the L.A. Zoo "GALLERY" - New Marla Maples, Kelly Osborne & Charo photos "BUZZ" - Keifer Sutherland locked up, And Britney's makeover "TALKBACK" has a listener who wants to start a campaign!

Wow, what a stunner yesterday when I first heard the news coming out of my home state of Nebraska where I grew up and started in radio years ago. A crazed gunman had opened fire in a shopping mall killing 8 people, wounding 5, two of them critically, and then turned the gun on himself. Does this look like the face of someone who could do that?

Cops identified the killer as 19-year-old Robert Hawkins. He left a suicide note that said "I'm going out in style" and "I'm going to be famous."

His mother found the note and gave it to police. The shooter’s friends said he was "depressed", had quit school several years ago, worked at a series of fast food jobs where he had just been fired by McDonald's earlier yesterday, he was also estranged from his family, and had broken up two weeks ago with his girlfriend.

Unfortunately the holiday season just exacerbates things for people who are having problems because you're supposed to be having fun and a good time in the spirit of the celebrations going on. It was about this same time of year back when I was growing up in the Cornhusker state that a 19 year old Charlie Starkweather killed a Nebraska gas station attendant in December of 1957, and then went on an 8 day murder spree in late January of 1958 with his 14 year old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate that began with the killings of her family, and eventually 10 total deaths before he was captured. He was tried, convicted and executed a year later in the Nebraska State Penitentiary.

There were several books written about the deadly killing spree including "Born Bad" and "Waste Land" (Starkweather and Fugate pictured on the cover below)

Starkweather became a national fascination that persists to this day inspiring the films "The Sadist", "Badlands", "Natural Born Killers", "Starkweather", "Murder in the Heartland" and even the Bruce Springsteen song "Nebraska". So perhaps Robert Hawkins will realize his twisted dream of being "famous".

By the way, Starkweather's girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate was sentenced to life in prison for the murder spree, but eventually had it reduced to 30 to 50 years and was paroled after serving 18 years. She eventually resettled in Michigan.

On a much happier note, the Southgate Christmas Parade is coming up this Sunday, and for those who want to know where our TV parade booth is, it's right near the intersection of Tweedy Boulevard and San Juan Avenue. My friend Don Barrett at LARadio.com ran a nice story on it at his website this morning.

Thanks again for all your emails, especially Lyn (you'll see my note to her on the "Tuna Talkback" link, some great new pictures in the gallery today including the queen of "Coochie Coochie", "Tuna Clips" features Part 1 of Christmas at the L.A. Zoo, and all sorts of "BUZZ" link stuff today, including Britney Spears planning an $81,000 makeover. Wait till you hear what she's doing to herself now!

Talk to you tomorrow and keep all those Nebraska families in your thoughts and prayers who lost someone yesterday!

Charlie

Wednesday Morning, December 5th! Introducing the final brand new link on my website today, "BUZZ". All the hot happenings and showbiz stuff! Plus pictures of Alexander, the earthquake predicting cat!

I'm feeling pretty lucky today since the new weekend weather forecast indicates the heavy rain, wind and cold temperatures coming in late Thursday night should clear out by Sunday afternoon in time for the annual Southgate Children's Christmas Lane Parade that I've co-hosted with Xiomara Galindo for Fox TV these past 18 years.

As I mentioned earlier, we tape it Sunday for playback on Fox on Christmas Day, and the odd thing about these past 18 years, the weather on the day we tape has always matched the weather when it's played back on TV on Christmas. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago when we had that record rainfall year, it rained on the parade when we taped and was raining again on Christmas Day when the show played back on the air. Viewers were convinced it was happening then "live"!

To get you in the mood for the coming snow in the mountains, our special "showman" snowman!

You'll also notice today my son Bryan has added the final new link on my redesigned website called "BUZZ"! If you want to quick fix each day of all the latest hot happenings and showbiz news and gossip, just click on the "BUZZ" each day. Check back later too for any breaking news that may happen. Pictures and videos will be posted daily with the stories. Today more troubles for Britney and K-Fed, the latest on the Quaid twins, and wait till you see the Amy Winehouse "then and now" pictures! Shocker!

Got a note today from Pat Barker about Alexander "the earthquake predicting cat" that he had 9 seizures yesterday. This remarkable 22 year old cat has seizures that precede every major worldwide quake or a sizeable one locally (I did notice we had a couple shakers down 50 miles north of the Mexican border yesterday that were in the 3.0 range), and it's been more than a coincidence with his timing because within 24 to 48 hours something shakes. Below is a picture of Pat's daughter Anna who surprised me on my birthday this past year with a visit from Alexander.

On the "Tuna Clips" today, the Top 10 list of the most hated Christmas gifts. In the "Gallery", added photos of the Laker Girls, Rick Schroder, Dora the Explorer, and Patrick Swayze, and in the "Tuna Talkback" emails today, more of your best wishes you continue to send. Thank you!

Tuesday Morning, December 4th! Today a great Christmas card, and proof that a dog is our best friend!

Some good news to start off with today! Our seasonal rainfall total is actually ahead of what is normal for this time of year in Southern California and a pretty good weekend storm with a lot of rain coming this Friday. We need all we can get to make up for last year's very dry year and the threat of water rationing next year. We may get more rain this weekend than all of last year some reports say.

Morning Listeners Gabor and Julie Dobos emailed me their Christmas display, pretty impressive. And to help you get into the season even more, here's an interactive Christmas Card several of you have sent me too. It's one of the best I've seen. Make sure you give it time to load each sequence. It's a 6 step process, but the final payoff is beautiful if you've got a few minutes. Click on the link!

http://ecard.ashland.edu/2004admission/index.html

Lot of nice comments about the interactive dog and tricks on yesterday's news link. But not all dogs are as smart as he is, take a look at this little guy.

And here's a YouTube video my dental hygienist passed along that just shows you why we love dogs so much. This one will make you feel good all over.

In radio news today, I notice more mass staff firings yesterday in Chicago, San Francisco and Las Vegas. A lot of people's favorite personalities are just disappearing because of corporate budget cuts, and the reaction of some of you in your emails is you're going to other media or just your CD's. I hope this turns around soon, but I'm not optimistic.

In the "Tuna Clips" today, find out what other people want for Christmas with Tuna Talking, new pictures in the "Gallery" and thank you again for all your emails that continue to come in. So many of you have told me how much you enjoy reading how other listeners feel too.

Enjoy our beautiful weather in Southern California today!

Charlie
