Tuesday Morning, April 15th! Tax Deadline Day! Last night I had a chance to reconnect with my Nebraska roots at the monthly get together of the Nebraska Coast Connection! "BUZZ" 3 leaders from "Dancing With The Stars", plus CMT Award winners last night! "PHOTO GALLERY" Herbie Husker, the University of Nebraska Football Mascot with Charlie at the Rose Bowl!

Anybody who's listened to me on Los Angeles radio for the past 41 years knows I still have a strong bond with my home state of Nebraska where I was born and raised for the first 19 years of my life. I'm especially proud of Nebraska's football team which is one of the top pigskin programs in the country (if you overlook the last 6 seasons or so), but with a new coach and a new attitude on campus, this should be one of those good years again this coming fall. The spring game this coming weekend is sold out and tickets for this team practice game are going for as much as $100....for a intersquad practice game, that will have nearly 70,000 fans packed into Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. That tells you the locals like our chances this fall too.

So last week I received an invitation to the Nebraska Coast Connection, a monthly gathering of transplanted Nebraskans to California trying to make in the world of showbiz.
Producer/Director Todd Nelson started the NCC with about thirty fellow Nebraskans to be both a network for entertainment professionals and a bridge between home and Hollywood. Here's the link for more info and how to sign up and register for next month, even if you're not a Nebraskan. http://nebraskacoast.com/

As the website explains, the idea was fostered by Todd's frequent trips home. He often visited late UN-L theatre professor Dr. Bill Morgan, who connected him with former students who were pursuing careers in the arts. With support from the University of Nebraska Foundation, the first NCC cocktail event in Bel Air drew 200 people, and the Nebraska Coast Connection was up and running.

Since then, they have hosted barbeques, play nights, Halloween parties, Christmas caroling and comedy nights. They've produced radio commercials, a few short films and two extensive websites.

But the centerpiece of the group since 1995 has been the regular monthly gatherings called The Hollywood Salon. Not to be confused with the place you get your hair done, the idea of an artist's salon has a rich history. From ancient times, writers and painters and poets and politicians have met in salon settings to share their art and discuss events of the day. In Athens, Paris and New York, Salons were important ways for ideas to germinate, artists to be discovered and valuable relationships to blossom. The Hollywood Salon continues that tradition with a slant toward careers in showbiz.

More than 2,000 Nebraskans have found their way into the Coast Connection. About sixty of them attend each monthly Salon. Writers, Actors, Directors, Producers, Musicians, Execs, P.A.s and more than a few Waiters take part. "Wanna-be's" are most welcome. It's here, with the support of friendly folks from back home, where dream-sharing is encouraged. Pictured below is some of the group that gathered with me last night on the CBS lot to share their projects, ideas, hopes and dreams.

Monday Morning, April 14th! There's a story on the internet lately about how ancient Rome still affects our society today, & how Rome even has had an impact on the Space Shuttle! "BUZZ" J.K. Rowling in court today over a Harry Potter fan's book, and "Prom Night" #1! "PHOTO GALLERY" Singer Joanie Sommers of "Johnny Get Angry" and "For Those Who Think Young" Pepsi Commercial fame in studio.

TODAY, (Pardon the language), THE TRUE STORY OF TWO HORSES ASSES!

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and English expatriates built the US railroads.

Why did the English build them like that? Because of the first rail lines and that's the gauge they used. Why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the
tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (and England) for their legions. The roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing.

Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever.

So the next time you are handed a Specification/ Procedure/ Process and wonder 'What horse's ass came up with it?' you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses' asses.) Now, the twist in the story:

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah . The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of two horses asses.

And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important? Ancient horse's asses control almost everything.. ..and CURRENT Horses Asses are controlling everything else!!

04/07/2008 @ 11:50am PST

Monday Morning, April 7th! Here's an alert to start your week. There's a cell phone email that's making the rounds has a lot bad information. Make sure you know the real story. "BUZZ" Beyonce & Jay-Z marriage mystery, & Hollywood legend Charlton Heston is dead. "PHOTO GALLERY" Spencer Davis, founder of the Spencer Davis Group, in studio!

THERE'S SO MUCH FALSE INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET, HERE'S THE LATEST!

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO.

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST: Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and
interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.

ACTUAL FACTS: Calling 112 on a cell phone will (in some parts of the world, mainly Europe) will connect you to local emergency services, and many cell phones allow the user to place 112 calls even if the phone lacks a SIM card or its keypad is locked. However, the 112 number does not have the ability to enable callers to use it in areas where cellular signals are unavailable.

SECOND: Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!"

ACTUAL FACTS: Cars with remote keyless entry systems cannot be unlocked by relaying a key transmitter signal via a cellular telephone. RKE systems and cell phones utilize different types of signals and transmit them at different frequencies.

THIRD: Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

ACTUAL FACTS: The claim that pressing the sequence *3370# will release "hidden battery power" in a cell phone might be a misunderstanding of an option that's available on some brands, such as Nokia, which provides about 30% more talk time on a battery charge at the expense of lower sound quality. But this option is enabled by pressing *#4720#. The sequence *3370# actually provides better sound quality at the expense of shorter battery life.

FOURTH: How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #. A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

ACTUAL FACTS: Entering *#06# may display a 15 digit identification number, but that only works with some types of cell phones, and reporting that ID number to your cellular service provider to stop the use of a lost or stolen phone is limited.

FIFTH: Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.

ACTUAL FACTS: 800 FREE 411 does provide free directory assistance to cell phone customers, but users should note that the information is "free", but cellular service providers may still assess charges related to placing such calls.
