WE MISS YOU!!!
Received: 09/30/2007 @ 6:04pm PST
From: Suzanne Hoeltzer
I heard you tell me it was your last day.
I really wanted it to be an April Fools Joke, however, it wasn’t.
My long drives to work were not bad because you were right there, keeping me
company.
I miss you and I know that others do too.
I would always look forward to you in the morning to help me take my mind
off of the drive to work.
I checked three times and no, you weren’t around.
That format may work elsewhere, but we really want/need you back.
Let us know where we can find you so we can get our daily fix!
I'm hoping there are enough of us out there not listening so maybe they will
think it over and ask you to do the morning show to RAISE THE RATINGS.
Your website is great and I thank your son.
We actually are able to sort of get our daily fix!
Please keep us informed and up to date.
Missing you...

Charlie, you have been a big part of my life, listening to your wonderful voice talking to all of us, every morning on my way to work. You have/had a very soothing voice, baritone like. I first heard you many years ago, when i was driving down to my daughters in San Clemente. It was Christmas week and this was the first time i heard that voice. Shortly thereafter, you became the early part of KBIG AND FROM THEN ON I NEVER CHANGED THE STATION1! I will surely miss you Charlie. You did a fantastic job every morning . You even had a great rapport with all the other staff, that is how it came across to us, on the other side. Let us know when you get the next gig!!! You will be sorely missed. No KBIG for me anymore. Fondly, Maeve

I first heard of you in 1966 at KOMA while driving from NY to SanFran to relocate for my job; I thought at that moment you were the best jock I had ever heard.....that from one who grew up in NY and New England; a year later I was back on the East Coast and I stumbled across your broacast from "Pontiac Village" (which is obviously long gone) on WMEX; while I never lived in LA I travelled there frequently on business....and after I retired my son now District Mgr for Pfizer in Beverly Hills lived in LA; when there I always set my clock radio to turn to your morning show (although more than once or twice I had to check to see which station that would be!) hope you are back on the air soon, somewhere, doing not just what you do best....but what you do better than anyone else! and I grew up with morning jocks like herb oscar anderson, klavan & finch (even rayburn & finch before that), ted brown, joe o'brien, etc.etc); you're the best of all time

Hey Charlie,
I hope it's okay to call you by first name, but you really feel like family to us.
I got used to waking up with you and the morning crew everyday at 6:00 a.m. Once ready, my kids and I drove to school listening to you, I dropped them off at school and continued listening in the car until I got to work. Once at work continued listening throughout the day.
I was very surprised, more of a shock I would say, when I heard your last day at KBIG.
WHAT HAPPENED!!! COMPLETE CHANGE!
I hope to hear your voice very soon even if it's a different radio station. I don't think I had ever gotten so attached to someone like I did listening to you, Irma, Producer Heather, Lori Ryan, etc.
WHERE DID EVERYBODY GO??
Keep us posted as to your next move. LOVE YOU AND WE MISS YOU!!
TAKE CARE AND GOOD LUCK, YOU DESERVE THE VERY BEST.

Hey Charlie
It was a pleasure to drive in LA each and every morning to hear your voice , your funny remarks and play the music to get us through our day. Your work with the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles is just heart warming, My grandson went to LA Childrens last year, coming from CHOC hospital, it was nice to know that you understood the needs of the kids, unfortunately the cancer osteosarcoma of the right leg, developed cancer in his lungs and he passed away two months before his 18th birthday. So what you did for the kids in helping them get through the tuff times, I feel you deserve to continue in what you like best to do, radio. Where your career takes you all I have to say is”Don’t give up or in just like the kids from LA Children’s or CHOC, I know you will continue to be out there somewhere in Radio doing what you like most… Take care of yourself I know one of these days I will hear your voice on the radio..

Charlie,
I have been out of town and turned on my radio yesterday and you weren’t there. I kept thinking something had happened to my radio. Today, the same thing….then I decided I needed to find out and to my sadness, you are no longer on 104.3. I have been in management for quite sometime and it still amazes me that management doesn’t appreciate what they have. Why change a GREAT thing? I have never emailed a TV or Radio personality before, but felt compelled to let you now how much you have touched others lives. You got me thru the morning rush hour with less stress and a smile on my face. So thank you. My mornings just won’t be the same.
I wish you all the best and hope to “hear” you soon!!!!

Kbigs mistake
Received: 09/28/2007 @ 10:53am PST
From: Robert Clark
Good morning Charlie,
I think Kbig made a huge mistake by changing their format and removing you of all people from their station. You made that station and they should reconsider bringing you back. Also if they are going to change their format and add hip hop and RB booooooooooooooooooooooooo for them. Everyone seems to be jumping on the band wagon of hip hop. Not everyone listens to that.
Well Mr. Tuna good luck in the future. Hey how about starting your own radio station? Like Ktuna sounds corny but you have a big audience and wherever you land people will tune in.

I just wanted to let you know that I truly miss your show in the morning. You were one of the best radio stations that I got into. I even got all my co-workers into your station. I was tired of listening to KIIS and Power 106, but the music you played was such a great mixture, it was a little bit of everything. I listened all day at work, I would stay tuned for community of the day, I would love the traffic info so I could avoid traffic or accidents going out from Studio City to Whittier. I just wanted to let you know that I'm one of your biggest fans which I'm sure you have plenty of and to say that I hope they realize what a loss that station has without you and your team. I hope you come back to radio soon!!!!
Your fan,

Hey Charlie!
I'm a HUGE fan of your show, what used to be KBIG104.3.... Unfortunately it isnt so anymore...
I remember a while back (maybe a few years) you did a rap with someone by the name of "Jurassic" or "Jurassiq" something like that, if I can recall the lyrics, it goes something like "Who are you (scratch scratch) I'm Charlie Tuna" it always made me laugh...
Any idea on where I can find a copy of that clip, if possible?
Thanks!
Joey
(Charlie Tuna Note For Joey: After I read your email, I put the story in the Tuna Clips section with a little bit of the sample for you. Just look for "Charlie becomes a rap star with Jurassic 5".

THE 'BIG' IN KBIG WAS YOU, CHARLIE!
Received: 09/27/2007 @ 12:33pm PST
From: Stephen Hartmann
Hello, Charlie! As the 45-yr.-old president of a Ventura County-based manufacturing company, and someone who has about 30 years of sales and marketing experience in a variety of industries, I tend to be naturally critical of the quality and content of different media.
Morning radio...heck, radio anytime....in particular seems to be an especially easy target since, despite years of trial and error experience stations should be able to learn from, their on-air talent, topics, pace and flow rarely meet what I feel the public--and I--really expects during their valuable listening time.
When I started listening to you on KBIG, I quickly learned there are indeed unique exceptions and discovered I could be loyal to one station when the quality was there and the station's on-air talent showed respect for my intelligence and seemed to genuinely appreciate my time and attention with thoughtful conversation.
I have to admit that I would get mildly annoyed when callers to KBIG would exclaim, "I've been listening to you for years and years" (or make other comments that were said in kindness, but almost made it seem like you were a "radio relic)" since your personality, energy and positive vibe is uncommonly fresh and cutting edge...a flame that is,
incredibly, brighter than ever and should provide inspiration to others who find themselves lacking interest in their jobs.
When our office heard your show was abruptly ending, I automatically assumed Clear Channel realized you would be even more valuable "headlining" a different project and was pulling you from the air in preparation for that impending launch.
My enthusiasm for the new door that appeared to be deservedly opening for you was the only reason I wasn't more disappointed you were leaving since I figured it would just be a few days before we learned where we could turn our dial next to tune into you.
However, when I logged on for the first time to your website (congrats to Bryan for a great one, by the way!) I was surprised to read there wasn't a "master plan" for you as part of Clear Channel's action...yet anyhow.
In our opinion, the "BIG" in KBIG's morning show was you, Charlie! We hope you enjoy your current time off and look forward to loyally following you to your next gig no matter what the format.
P.S. Please add us to your e-mail list to be updated on developments in your career.

Hello, Charlie Tuna!!
Let me start by saying that my ride to work just isn't the same anymore!!!
I am (was) a long-time listener of KBIG, and boy, oh boy, I am at a loss for words!
My 9-year-old daughter, Ariana, is taking it hard! I think she was an even bigger fan!! I can't tell you how many times she begged me to call in during one of your contests!!
You also hit close to home during your "Tunathon" with Children's Hospital. That hospital has a special place in my heart: my daughter Ariana was treated there as an infant , after she was diagnosed with retinoblastoma (eye cancer) at almost two months of age. After treatment of laser surgery and later three cycles of chemotherapy (under the guidance of Dr. Linn Murphree), she was given a clean bill of health! She's been in remission for almost 8 years!!!
Charlie, we miss you!!! We miss the music, and we miss listening to you!!!! My daughter asked me, "Mom, what are we gonna listen to now????" Just thought we'd let you know!!! We'll be checking in on your website to see what you're up to!!
We wish you the absolute best!!
Take care, and God Bless!!!

Hi Charlie ?
Way back in the Dark Ages, well, okay, it was like 1970-71, you took the time on a Sunday morning after your show to talk on the phone with a young jock trying to make his way. While I can’t recite what we talked about (hell, I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night), I do know that you gave me the gumption to keep after what I wanted and that I haven’t forgotten. Since that time, whenever your name comes up in conversation with radio people, I mention that phone call. Not for the “Neener-neener, I talked to Charlie Tuna” aspect, but for the “Charlie Tuna took the time to talk to some dweeb he didn’t know and offered some encouragement.”
No, I never became a big-time jock. After short stints on a 2kw FM Panorama City and an AM daytimer in Westlake Village, I had the opportunity in 1972 to join RKO as an engineer at KFRC. I ran the board for guys like Jim Carson, Bob Foster, Bobby Ocean, Eric Chase, and spent almost ten years with Dr. Don Rose (also from Kearney). More than a few years ago I saw you at a remote I had to do for the CMAs at Universal (when one of our since-sold FMs was Country). I wanted to say hi and to thank you for talking to me back then but by the time I could break away, you were gone.
These days I’m more concerned with the 401k than what to do for the :07 set, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I don’t have to tell you that anybody that can stay in the same market for as long as we have must be doing something right. I just wanted you to know, from one radio type to another, that your work was and is appreciated and you’re on a very short list of nice guys in this business. I know we’ve both seen the best and the worst.
Take care.

Charlie,
I have never written or talked to you on the phone before, but I feel compelled to do so now.
I moved here to Southern California 2 years ago from Victoria, BC Canada and found your radio station KBIG and have been listening to you since then. Out of all the shows on the air, your show was the best! You just have that way about you that brings people closer. I think everyone feels a kinship with you, as I have these past 2 years.
I have read your “About Charlie” page and learned lots of things about you. Living in Canada all my life, I didn’t know about you, but I still feel like I’ve known you for years.
I was so surprised that morning to hear that you wouldn’t be on the radio anymore and I was very sad. But I do look forward to the day when you tell us all that you will once again be on the radio. Please let it be soon. Miss you.

No Charlie Tuna Podcast

Talk about confusing, I took off one day from work and missed a lifetime of radio history. Nothing online as to the change in programming. No Daily podcast which really confused me. It was only when I asked my assistant at work that I found out what had happened. I'm sorry to see you go. Like many others have probably told you. I have been listening to you since I was younger, in high school and college. I think I was one of the first to get your daily podcast. I will miss driving to work using your podcast. Please keep me informed as to where you are going. I will miss you in the mornings on my drive to work at 5am. I always felt we were the only ones up at that time, your staff and me.

Dear Charlie;
I wanted to take a moment to write to you to express my sadness and sorrow from your departure with KBIG. Even though I didn't have the privilege of knowing you personally, nor have contacted you on air or via email...until now, the feelings that I am going through is somewhat of a mourning.
You have been a large part of my music life since I was 8, in 1967, remembering 93KHJ AM when there wasn't FM stations and through DISCO adolescence and adult years with KIIS FM, up through KBIG. You have brought much happiness, joy, sincerity, pleasure, talent, professionalism, and tremendous gifts to everyone and especially those less fortunate. I truly appreciate all that you have done and will continue to do.
Should you need anything, please feel free to contact me. I've been a successful Marketing and Advertising professional for over 20 years. I would be happy to take a part in bringing you back on the air.
My best wishes to you with continued success.

BEST WISHES

Hello Charlie,
I have been a listener for many years. It is extremely sad that you are no longer on the air. I miss listening to you involving me in the conversations about daily happenings and just life in general. I have changed the station now when I wake up. I want to wait that extra 5 minutes to hear what you had on the latest gossip (even thought it meant me being late on getting out the door) I want to laugh, cry and enjoy what was your acting studio. I miss all that. Listening to you brought joy to my heart, something that can not be replaced by music alone.
Charlie, I used to wake up in the morning, sit in bed for a while and just listen to you chat and laugh. I felt like I was right there in the studio with you having the conversations (I would even talk back to the radio and give my opinion). It was good, it was innocent (not like all this other vulgarity on air) it was above all entertaining. I guess propaganda and money are the true winners in all these radio war fares, with the DJ being the casualty of war. I am upset that they have for now silenced your voice from the airwaves. I am happy that you still have a job, but your career is letting your voice and words be heard. You are too special a person to not be on air. I wish you all the best in your new position. I will miss your stories of your wonderful cats, your kind heart and professionalism. I will really miss the a.m. radio time with you all. I must go out and search for a new station that fits my personality. Please inform me if you ever come back on air. Hope all is well and hope you can respond to my e-mail. Nothing but best regards to you. Please don’t think of me as a Looney tune with no life. I have a wonderful family and busy life. Listening in the morning and at work just made my day go better. I went home after work in a great mood, even though my work load was heavy. When I feel passionate about something, I must say what I feel. As I just have.
Sincerely,
Debbie Cruz

Hi Charlie,
I wanted to let you know that I will really miss hearing your voice on the mornings on K-BIG 104. I never tried calling the studio for promotions and stuff. I was “stunned” when I was listening on the radio last Monday (on my way to work) and I heard you say those famous words “this is my last day.”
Listening to you every morning is like wearing my favorite sweater. I listen to several radio stations throughout the day, but your station (and particularly you) is the one I listen to first whenever I get into the car.
I guess with the radio business disc jockeys move around ? depending on the ratings. I can’t tell you the number of times I listen to someone ? and suddenly they are gone…and you do not have a clue on what happened to them. Unfortunately it is business and the bottom line.
Anyway, if you stay with Clear Channel, I hope to sometimes hear you on airwaves on some type of schedule basis. You are greatly missed!!!!

I’m 47 and have listened to you since I can remember. I just moved back to OC after living in Honolulu, HI and Klamath Falls, OR for the last seven years. I can’t tell you how much I missed good radio broadcasting. Stations have really changed here and I just got lucky searching the stations when I got to hear your last broadcast. I’m so glad I didn’t miss it. True to form you went off the air with much warmth and class. We all need continual examples of high standards in this age of everyone behaving badly. I can’t wait to hear what you will be up to next ? you’re way too young to retire!
I hope Clear Channel does the right thing by you and understands how sad they have made the general populace in the meantime. Thanks for so many years!

Hi Charlie. I am still in shock at the news. Did you see it coming or was it completely unexpected?
I will certainly miss you as I remember listening to you when I first moved to LA. You're the reason I listened to KBIG.
The first night I was telling my 7 year old that you would not be on the radio, he was so upset! He ranted and raved for 15 minutes about how you are such a nice person, and they really messed up by not having you on. So even KIDS are upset over this!
Charlie, I want you to know you made things possible for me I never dreamed of. I remember when Deborah Gibson was on one day (I believe it was 2000) and I called you to see what the new album was. You asked me to hold a minute and put Deb on the phone! That was totally amazing. (Gosh here come the tears.) Anyway, then last year Breakfast with Tiffany was something else too. I got to meet you and meet/talk to 2 of my favorite singers.
I really hope they come to their senses and realize they need a morning show again with you. I look forward to hearing from you (when you have time...you are very popular and I've read about how many e-mails you got) and please do keep us posted as to when and where we can hear you.
Love and Best wishes,

Dear Charlie,
I am a 39 year old husband and father, and in the morning traffic of last Monday I, for some reason, turned on your show on the list of radio stations I have placed in my radio as I traveled slowly down the Sepulveda Pass only to here that the radio station that has been your home for some time is changing their format and letting you go. I couldn’t help but think of how many times I have heard your voice on the radio (no matter what station you’re on) and be at ease as to the subject, the content, the entertainment, and the ease as to listening to you speak as a radio host on the stations I have heard you on through my life as a Southern Californian. Top 40, KHJ, KIIS, even KROQ. I can say that more than your voice, but your professional attitude and ability to entertain the listening audience, has kept me a fan. I hope to hear your voice again on another station no matter what format.
It’s not what you tell but how you tell it.
Sincerely,

As with all the other writers and listeners, I was stunned to turn on my radio and hear a selection of songs that were out of the norm. WHAT is up, I think. I then log into the KBIG website where I had been following the news and collecting my points. HUMMM this is strange.
The next morning with the same results I switch over to KROQ and JACK. So management is trying to get to women of a “certain age”?
As a 35 yr old business WOMAN, I am beyond displeased with the way radio stations feel they can just “switch off”. I have always wondered why radio has the right to just pull the plug on a show, change call letters, and switch gears in mid stream. NO warning.
Radio is a part of American History and the listener should be treated with more respect as well as the DJ who spends all their time entertaining their listener.
Charlie, I hope that everything pans out ok for you. We will all miss you, the Tunathon, Free Car Fridays, and a number of other events you have supported and announced.

Sorry to see you leave the station. Since the 60's I have enjoyed listening to you from Kearney, Nebraska as my in-laws and wife are from McCook and Minden. In fact, in 1970 I interviewed you while I was a broadcast student at Los Angeles Valley College or should I say you took over and interviewed me. I learned a lot from that interview with you. I went on to work in Fresno and El Centro, California and eventually wound up owning three radio stations in the market till I sold out in 1999. Where will you pop up next?

I'm disappointed that I no longer can listen to you in the morning as I drudge my way to work through the traffic - listening to your show made the drive easier. I will very much miss the laughter and chats you had with your guests. I also enjoyed the music, but it was your conversations, games and jokes that kept me tuned in to Kbig.
I look forward to hearing your voice and laughter again on air!

Hi, I am a 36 yr old married man with 3 kids and I wanted to let you know what you and your station meant to me. First of all, I grew up with all of the music you played on your station, loved all the 80’s,90’s (especially the freestyle) I rarely changed stations, only to listen to sports talk.. but even while listening to sports talk I HEARD YOUR VOICE ! You were on talking about Beckham, which I thought was cool ! Thanks to you and your staff for leaving me with great memories because I would to listen to you and your station everyday while I worked on my home addition (which took me over 2 years ? I’m did it myself with help from my brothers and uncles ? I’m a computer guy not a construction guy, which goes to show you what we can do with help from family and music), everytime I heard the music you guys would play, not only would I remember my high school / college days, I would remember working on my house with my family. (Which by the way I converted over to your station from kiss and pwr)… so I hope to hear you again soon, ...but please know that you and your station left a lasting memory on this family.
Thank you,
Mora Family
Ps. Your son is doing a great job with your website. I too do the same thing, I have a normal job and then do the web stuff on the side… ask him for me what he uses… i.e. Dreamweaver etc…??
