9th Street West Episode
Received: 04/16/2008 @ 6:43am PST
From: Nuri Melendez

Hi Charlie,

My name is Nuri Melendez. Back on December 31, 1965 (I think), I was on 9th Street West which aired out of KHJ Studios on Hollywood Blvd. Sam Riddle was the host, and you were there also. The guest was Sopwith Camel (hit was “Hello, Hello”). There was a contest where Sopwith Camel picked the girl he wanted to spend New Year’s Eve with…and guest what! He chose me! I won a Mirror Go Lightly. I finally gave that mirror away two years ago. How would I be able to obtain a copy of that show. I was on another time when the show changed to a sit-down-only show. I can’t remember what that show was called. I think it was called “Groovy”, but I don’t remember. You were there again. Pam Nelson also hosted.

You really take good care of yourself. It shows. You look great on your picture.

I have been employed by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for 29 years. Anyone who has ever worked around me knows how much I love to sing the music you played for us those years.

Respectfully,

Nuri Melendez

NOTE TO NURI: I’m not really sure if they even kept tapes of those old “9th Street West”, “Boss City” and “Groovy” shows (I did host “Groovy” in the early 70’s for awhile). I didn't arrive in town until November of 1967, so I never appeared on 9th Street West. KCAL Channel 9 would be the station to ask, they were formerly known back then as KHJ-TV. I do remember Kam Nelson, I still get questions about her every so often, but I don’t know what happened to her after she and her then husband Olympic champion Bob Seagren split up. Congratulations on your long career with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. You public servants are so under appreciated, give my best to all your fellow officers!

Charlie!

Well, darn. I had wondered whatever happened to you! I was a big listener back when I lived in the L.A. area. I moved to Ventura and was so lonely except when I listened to the radio. You were there! (KODJ or KCBS... whatever it was at the time) In fact, I even won a trivia contest and my prize was a cool t-shirt and an "earthquake" detector. I still had that plastic slinky until recently when one of the neighborhood kids fell in love with it. I've moved up to Northern Santa Barbara County where the radio signal gets lost in the hills
between here and Santa Barbara. So I was ever so happy to find that KRTH was streaming their broadcasts and all my "old" favorites are there for me to listen to.

I hadn't been listening the last few months -- hey, Santa brought me a new iPod for Christmas and I had to test it out. And then I trudged into work last Saturday sans iPod and ... THERE YOU WERE!

Welcome home, Charlie.

Listening with love,
Aimee Reinhart Avery

P.S. If you get a chance, would you play something by Jan & Dean for me?

So good to hear you again!

Dear Charlie,

It's great to hear you on KRTH. I've got you on the weekends. This is the station of memories, and your voice brings back many.

I was a fan years ago -- and a fan again today. Thanks for coming back.

I've become a recent listener to K-Earth 101, and was I surprised to hear your name. I was born in L.A. in 1958, and grew up listening to KHJ. Around 1971, I moved across country, and returned to the area around 1990. Only recently, have I gone back to listening to the radio while driving. My late husband or kids usually won the "what will we
listening to argument". When I heard your name, I was thrilled. It was like going home again. Although you look so young in your picture, I thought maybe there was another "Charlie Tuna". My only other brush with my youth was when I discovered I went to the same College as Robert W. Morgan. Different years of course. Sorry I was never able to meet him before he passed away. Thanks for making me feel young again.

Charlie Tuna!!!

I am so happy you're on KRTH. I listened to you when you were on KRLA (makes me feel old, just saying KRLA!!) I was so happy to find out that you would be on my favorite radio station. Hearing your voice made me smile. I have switched to other stations but I always come back to KRTH because of the personalities and the content they bring to the show. I tune Saturday morning on my way to work to hear your wonderful voice!

Claudia DeVere

P.S. Do you remember Bill Balance?!??! He was one of my Dad's favorite personalities.

I am so happy that you are on KRTH. We met you one day about 20 years ago at the water park in Irvine. That was a really fun day.

Good luck.

An old fan,

Welcome Back!

It was hard to justify listening to the radio in the morning... I missed your deep funny laugh. My kids were just teasing me because I felt "old" when "my music" was now KRTH music! No offense, but Elton John should NEVER be thought of as an "oldie."

Right after your untimely departure (and you sure did handle it well... a true gentleman!) I actually made a button for KRTH. I wonder if it was meant to be much like you felt?

I pledge to make KRTH my main station if the station pledges to let you do your annual TUNATHON!

Take that one to management and ask them to dare to say "no."

I hadn't made it a habit of listening to the radio on the weekends...but now when I drive my 10yr old for a soccer tournament, they had better bring their Ipods!!! LOL

Welcome Back Charlie. You Were Missed.

Leslie Medina

OMG, I couldn't wait to hear you again! My prayers were answered, although I wish you had a morning show.....I just couldn't enjoy the other station any more. I stuck it out until the end of 2007 but since, I've just been surfing the airwaves, listening to radio Disney even after I've dropped the kids at school! Just buying time until I got the word, where and when I could hear you again!!! I am so happy and I hope this works out for you. Best of luck!

Take Care,
Cheri, Quentin & Natalie
