Good Morning Charlie,

What a wonderful Summer Hits Weekend. You really was blowing the dust from some great oldies from the music closet.

I heard several that I haven't heard in a long, long time, I especially enjoyed, "Rose Royce--Wishing On a Star" an The Midniters--Whittier Blvd. We just don't get to hear these songs in this location. Thanks for Streaming K-EARTH.

Thank You Charlie

Hello Charlie Tuna,

Just a note from Australia while listening to your summer hits weekend on the internet, that it's our winter season down here. Lovely to hear your music though, and what's going on in Los Angeles. Really enjoyed looking at all the sights and sounds of your website too!

Charlie, glad to be listening to you again. Was a loyal listener when you and Fran Tunno hosted your AM show on 570 AM years ago. I really miss her, wish she would guest host with you some weekend for old times sake. Since you're playing summer hits, could you possibly play Beach Baby by First Class?? Don't think I EVER heard K-Earth play that song, and it was a popular 70s hit. Thanks!!!.... Laurence

(NOTE TO LAURENCE: As a matter of fact, I just played Beach Baby last weekend when we did the first weekend round of Summer Hits. And you're right, it's a great Southern California song for summer!}

LA to Montana

Hey Charlie Tuna,

Pam Christian here, AKA female voice on the Howard's commercials Jay Gardner has produced at CBS radio stations in LA.

My 19 year old son and 5 others are cycling across America to raise awareness and money for the people of Rwanda. Considering the horrific suffering the country's people recently endured, knowing that coffee is their only industry and that it must be transported by bicycle, with every pump of the pedal these six young men are providing hope.

The guys conceived, planned and organized this entire effort on their own and to date have raised over $50,000. They have also secured some very impressive sponsors. You can learn more at their web site, http://www.therideforrwanda.org/ Especially listen to their blogs and see the You Tube Teaser - link on the blog page.

They started their trip in Anacortes, WA on the 16th. They don't plan on stopping until they reach New York. Along the way already, they have been welcomed by people, even invited to a family's home where they enjoyed hot showers -- though as they recently experienced there is nothing like showering in a waterfall! Hearing the story of the selfless effort of these young men, people can't help but want to be of support and part of offering real hope. Watch for a white van painted with the words, Bikes-People-Coffee-Hope.

Charlie:

Growing up in the Boston area, I remember you on WMEX back in 1967. I was 14 during most of 1967, but as a radio guy myself now just handling a weekend talk show at a small station south of Boston, the memories of radio in my youth are still quite strong.

I caught you on a New Hampshire station when you were syndicated with the "music of your life" format one day several years ago. and you mentioned you received an email or letter from Bill Jones of Florida, who said he was a retired radio personality. I was wondering if this is Bill Jones ("The Jones Boy") who was at WMEX circa 1962, and then again 1965-1966, leaving less than six months before you arrived in early 1967. I'm pretty sure that Bill Jones retired to Florida. He would be about 75 or 76 years of age now. He lived in Malden in 1965-66, not very far at all from where you lived in Melrose.

I know that Larry Justice lives in the Naples, Florida area now and works in real estate. Larry Glick is still alive and lives in Florida as well. Mel Miller passed away several years ago. Steve Fredericks retired from Philly sports talk radio a few years back. The years pass so quickly!

Thank you and best wishes for continued success!

Mr. Charlie Tuna:

What can I say to you that you have not heard before? I first heard your show back in 1978 while stationed in Okinawa. Back in that little island in the middle of the ocean was this Puerto Rican buck-private, first time out of his own island himself (not much English) a friend let me use his radio. I woke up with your show and went to sleep with it. 30 years later, retired from the ARMY, (and back in my little island) one of the only good things that I can remember and miss about the military was you daily show. Thank you for making my days away from my island a little more comfortable and to put a smile in my face when I need it the most. Muchas Gracias, Mi Amigo!

Nice to have you back!
Received: 06/22/2008 @ 12:29pm PST
From: Marsha Swindler, Ph.D.

Glad to hear that you liked my egg trick story, raw to hard boiled in one H-O-T So Cal afternoon!

BTW nice to have you back on the air with the tunes that suit you B-E-S-T, Charlie Tuna! You (and the on-air corporate sponsors at that time) sent me a dozen red roses for our 16th wedding anniversary in 1984. (Thanks for the roses 24 years ago! We celebrate our 40th anniversary this November 30th.) The Vietnam War brought us together at a young age, and here we are still listening to Charlie Tuna, same as way back then! The contest for the roses was to tell a story about “our song;” our song being Dedicated to The One I Love by the Mamas and the Papas. I have a very old cassette tape of that on-air conversation when you asked me to tell you the story. My kids remember it well because they were late to school that morning as we were chatting on the phone!

Westpac 1967, when Jay was on the aircraft carrier CVA-31 Bon Homme Richard in the Tonkin Gulf and I was in Southern California listening to Charlie Tuna on the air, we synchronized the time difference and listened to that very Mamas and Papas tune at the same time.

Fun times listening to you again on the weekends when we are in town! If I miss your weekend shows I check out The Tuna Can to catch up. You keep me laughing with your wit and insight. Another coincidence I just realized when I read your bio: I did not know that you started KROQ. Since you are not the morning DJ anywhere anymore, I got hooked on the KROQ Kevin and Bean Show [Sorry ;-( Charlie.], when our daughter Amy interned there in 1992-93. The guys would occasionally put Amy on-air, especially when she would accidentally slam doors in the control room in the early morning hours before 6 a.m.

If you EVER go back to mornings I am with you (Why, at this age, would we EVER volunteer to work at that hour anymore????), but shhhhh don’t tell Kevin and Bean! They keep me current with today’s hits, but my first love is the 60s music . . . Here is my juke box with my own collection of 45s . . . Again, SOOOOO nice to have you back, and this tune by the Beach Boys, Warmth of the Sun—WOW—such great summer memories!
~ Dr M

(NOTE TO LISTENERS AND READERS: Marsha's original note and pictures of her egg trick can be seen in the Monday, June 23rd "NEWS" link.)

Charlie,

Great show today, especially the Tim Russert reflections. Next Saturday is the 10th reunion of the Notre Dame Class of 1998. I was wondering if Bryan will be going. I hope all is well. I am still teaching at ND with no plans of retiring. Let's hope for a resurgence of the Nebraska football team --- very good chance --- and the Notre Dame football team
--- not as likely.

Have a great day,

Good Morning Charlie,

So sorry about the Lakers. They worked hard...maybe next year,

I enjoyed your news section from today's Charlie Tuna News.

The "You could hear a pin drop", section was really neat. But, the link back to the sixties was really wonderful. I don't believe I have seen a flashback to the sixties.put together so well as this one.

Thanks so much for all the hard work you put into your website.

It's a Joy,

I enjoy listening to you on the web. I first listened to you when you were still an "up-n-comer" and got your first "BIG GIG" as part of the "KOMA Crew" in OKC. I liked you then, I like you now.

Did you go from KOMA to KHJ / KRTH?

When did you first arrive at KHJ? And have you stayed there since or have you been somewhere else and then back there?

You're a pro Charlie, and I will continue to listen to ya!

GO! GO!! GO!!!

Mike Mitchell

Tulsa, OK

NOTE TO MIKE: KOMA in Oklahoma City was indeed my first BIG station, after my start at age 16 on KGFW in my hometown of Kearney, Nebraska, then a year in Wichita at KLEO, KOMA, WMEX in Boston for 9 months and then the offer from 93/KHJ in L.A. Since KHJ, there have been 15 other stations in L.A. that I've done a morning show on, including a brief year back to KHJ in 1977, after leaving in 1972 to start KROQ and 3 years later, becoming the PD and morning man at KIIS AM & FM. If you scroll back to some of my early "NEWS" links and "TALKBACK" replies, you'll find out even more info.

GOOD MORNING CHARLIE!

Just wanted to let you know that yesterday Alexander had 7 episodes, and today, Anna reports that he as started off the day with six mild ones. If he keeps going like this we may not need that Earthquake Drill in November!

Have a great day. You sounded fantastic this weekend, As Always!

Say Hi to the Family!
Pat

NOTE TO READERS AND LISTENERS: For those who don't know, Alexander is this earthquake predicting cat who gets seizure episodes everytime his sixth sense feels any large global or local significant earthquake activity will occur before it happens. The cat has been astonishingly accurate. Later, after this email on Tuesday, Reno had a very big swarm of earthquakes that shook the region. Coincidence?
