Hi Charlie. I wish I could have been in Chicago – to hear it live – but thanks to your wonderful website – I got to hear Larry Lujack’s intro and your acceptance speech. Congrats Charlie on your award and acknowledgement , you deserve it. You’ve been such an influence to many of us in radio. GREAT on air – GREAT human. Growing up in Winnipeg Canada, where you couldn’t hear much outside radio, I first heard you through those Last Contest air checks Jack McCoy sent around the country. I listened to those tapes a thousand times. I can recite many of your intros through memory still today. LOVE how you’re sounding on K-EARTH. Cheers. Reg. Hi Charlie,
Congrats on your well deserved Hall of Fame induction. Couldn't get through on that 1 800 number to call you on the air. Fabulous show ... wouldn't miss it. You're a class act. Thanks for introducing me to my favorite singer - Frankie Valli, a few decades back in Boston. Would love to hear Tell It To The Rain, Save it For Me or Opus 17 by the 4 Seasons. Take care...

Hi Charlie. Congatulations on the induction...long over due. I was born in Omaha, elementary school in Fremont, where in Nebraska do you hail from???
(NOTE TO MICHAEL: Kearney is my home city in Nebraska, and if you listened to or watched my induction ceremony speech, you know Jack Lewis, who was the morning man when I was first discovered him on KGFW getting ready for school at 5 years old, Jack was the inspiration for my wanting to be in radio. And eventually, I got my start on that same station, KGFW in Kearney, when I was 16.)

You Gotta Love It! Received: 11/12/2008 @ 1:13pm PST

From: Pat Barker
Hi Charlie!
I just had to tell you what I learned from watching the cable channels this weekend.
It appears that once a year, in Australia, the citizens engage in a contest. This contest consists of stringing a frozen fish onto a rope. The contestant (mostly men) then stand on a designated spot, swing the fish around in circles like their doing the Hammer Throw, then throwing the fish as far as possible.
The person who throws the fish the farthest wins. No one mentioned what the prize was.
The name of this contest? Why The Tuna Toss, what else?
Don't you just love it!
Pat Barker
P. S. So. . . how was your trip to the National Radio Hall of Fame?
NOTE TO PAT: Love the Tuna Toss! National Radio Hall of Fame details and pictures are featured in the "NEWS" link of my website for the week of November 10th - 14th, plus there's a link to the video of the entire induction ceremony.

I was reading some of your E-mail… I think everyone knows your worth… millions to all of us that love hearing your voice on the radio. There never has been, and I doubt will ever be, a “disc jockey” as great as you are. You are very professional, and still entertain us, have funny stories to share, and have time to do good deeds.
One of my favorite was the TUNATHON for children’s hospital in LA. I always waited for that and used it as my chance to share. I am looking through my check book to see if I sent them a check, only to find out I have some writing to do!!!!!!!! Charlie you are great, we all love you. XOXOXOXOXO Penny Nay Meggitt Safety System

Thanks for all the pictures and information from the Hall of Fame Induction Saturday Evening.. I could not be more proud of anyone for being inducted than you Charlie Tuna.. Your time was cut short as well as Larry Lujack. You where in the presents of some great talent. When I was young my brother and myself would listen to WLS, Chicago early in the morning like 6:00AM while milking our cows from an old AM Radio in the barn.. Congratulations and Thanks for all the pleasure given while listening to an absolute professional. Take care my friend Doug Hooker :-)

Charlie Tuna Award Received: 11/10/2008 @ 12:16pm PST
|
From: Bill Mouzis
In learning that KRTH "s Charlie Tuna was inducted this past Saturday into the 2008 National Radio Hall of Fame gives me the pleasure of offering him one big "Congratulations" for achieving and receiving such a great honor among his peers, one deserved without hesitation. Charlie, I remember well when you first arrived at the Boss Radio/93/KHJ studios in 1967 fresh from the flatlands of the midwest and looking a bit awestricken knowing how big this was and that you would now be working for the number one radio station in the country under the direction of Bill Drake and Ron Jacobs. To make a long story short you proved your professionalism and successes many times over in this very competitive market with your penchant for hard work and preparedness, and of course possessing that great God-given voice and delivery. As 93/KHJ's production director it was always my pleasure working with you directly when the occasion called for it in a very heavy production schedule. There were no second and third takes with you at the Mike. On a more personal note, when you and your lovely wife Shari asked my wife Nancy and me to be the godparents of your son it was an honor we have never forgotten and of course accepted without hesitation. The fact that you are now on KRTH/101 weekends is not only a big plus for Los Angeles radio today but is in my opinion one of the reasons KRTH has captured the greatest share of the listening audience in the market as recently published. Jhani Kaye and his staff deserve a world of credit in achieving this great success and being smart enough to hire you. Finally, once again Nancy and I thank you and Shari for attending the celebration of our 60th wedding anniversary this past June at our home in Lake Balboa. We all know there are those you remember and those that just fade away never to be heard about again, but you have never been forgotten by me nor the industry. You are as vibrant as ever, and your achievements at 93/KHJ in the sixties and early 70's are simply legend. Charlie, you are truly deserving of this award, and unlike the beliefs of the late and lovable Leo Durocher, nice guys do finish first. Bill Mouzis

Trivia Inquiry Received: 11/10/2008 @ 11:16am PST

From: Joe Hobson
Hello Charlie Tuna.
I have a question that I have been attempting to get answered for a while. And, you, for someone that has been in the DJ business for so long would, hopefully, be able to answer.
There was a song back in the mid to late 60s that had these words: "oh yes its plastic, you know its plastic" and another section was "it was 36-24-36, but you know its plastic....".
I have been contacting others in attempt to get the name of this song and where I could possibly get a copy. So far, no one seems to remember this song.
Your help would be appreciated.
Keep the music turning.
Joe Hobson
(NOTE TO JOE: Sorry Joe, You got me stumped on this one too. The only song that would be even close that I remember is "Plastic Man" by the Kinks, but that's not it!)

Charlie, I was happy to read the LARP account of your Radio Hall of Fame induction and the credit you gave to your "very private wife, Shari."
Women like her are the secret ingredient in many long and successful careers in radio including mine. They seek no attention, but they deserve our gratitude for their counsel and all the bases they cover for our families while we serve the often 'insane' demands of our business.
Success and happiness to you always,
Mike Sakellarides

Biography Received: 11/09/2008 @ 2:58pm PST

From: Randy Schmidt
Charlie,
We were in touch some time ago (YEARS ago!) when I compiled and edited the Carpenters "Yesterday Once More" compendium of articles, interviews and more. You were such a great help in allowing me to include your 1976 interview with Karen and I am hoping you will extend the same to a new project I am working on. It's a Karen Carpenter biography called "A Song for You," due out in late 2009 or 2010 from Chicago Review Press. I would like to include some of Karen's quotes from that interview and another you sent me on the subject of love and love songs (should a quote be found appropriate for the project). Any help is greatly appreciated...
Randy Schmidt
PS: Is there any chance a photo of you with Karen exists? I am seeking previously unseen and rare photos to include in the book, too.

Old fan checking in again...20 years later Received: 11/08/2008 @ 2:30am PST

From: Tom Zsenyuk
Hi Charlie, How the technology has changed! The last time I spoke with you, was at KRLA off-air on the telephone, and we shared Lyle Alzado stories. I still remember the "cheap skate" anecdote you told. It's good to hear you on R&R again, although the C&W stint was very nice too. A real pro you are. Do you pod cast? I was half-dazed last Saturday, when you played the original Monster Mash, and had a taped interview with Bobby "Boris" Pickett. It was really interesting, but I only remember fragments. It would be nice if I could re-listen. Finally, I'm sure that you keep in touch with Charlie Van Dyke. He's still got the pipes! I would like to email him a story from my childhood in Detroit. I'm probably one of very few that recalls of the weirdest incidents in broadcasting, and Charlie Van Dyke was a part of it. I'll tell you the story with hopes that you'll cut and paste it, and forward to Charlie, or pass along his address. I think it was in the late 60's, maybe 1968, and it was a Sunday. Cold and plenty of snow on the ground. Charlie had a normal weekday shift at CKLW. A frustrated Detroit Red Wing fan unbeknownst to most anyone, had taken a chain saw to the guy wires of the giant FM/TV stick co-located with the CKLW studios on Riverside Drive, West on the Detroit River in Windsor (corner of Riverside Dr., W. and Janette). At that time, the radio studios were at that building as well as the TV and the FM. Police evacuated the building, and all of CK's ops went black - or silent, depending on the medium. Everything was sudden and no explanation/alert was given. I was listening to the AM side when it went silent. I figured it was a technical glitch, was would be fixed in a moment or two. I kept listening to silence for about an hour (or maybe more). It didn't matter that much, because I think I was doing my homework anyway. Then, lo-and-behold, the radio came to life again. I could swear it was the voice of Charlie Van Dyke. He apparently had been contacted at home by management, and drove out to the country (Harrow, Ontario) where the AM antenna farm was located. He had jerry-rigged a studio there to get back on the air! I don't remember if he was able to play records, or if he was confined to jabbering. I'm sure there wasn't any way to intersperse spots. The fan, I recall, was arrested to "dry out", and the tower never fell and no one was hurt thankfully. But that was something. Like I said, I hope you enjoyed the story; perhaps you even knew it. I'll be tuning-in as always, although I don't get home from work until around 3 am on Saturdays (now you see why that interview was a little "foggy"). Keep up the Hall of Fame work. Sincerely yours, Tom (The Pharmacist) Zsenyuk Laguna Niguel

I was transferring some of your AFRTS work and came upon this. I had to send a copy. THANK YOU for doing the work on the shows that you did for them (us), it meant a lot to us in the field. I did two tours in the field with AFRTS and have been looking for the recordings for the longest time.
Recently I found someone who was a “radio kid” in Germany, recorded hundreds of hours (mostly of your program 1976-92) AND SAVED THE TAPES. I’ve been transferring them to digital (cd quality) I’ve also heard from a couple of Germans that learned English from AFN, that did great transfers also. Thom Whetston
NOTE TO LISTENERS AND READERS: Thom sent me a clip from one of my 1982 Armed Forces Radio Network shows (That's what AFRTS stands for...the "T" is for "Television). It was my then 2 year old son Bryan in my studio, who loved to dance and sing-a-long to "Freeze Frame" by the J. Geils Band. And as a lot of you know, Bryan is the one who grew up to, among a zillion other things, to design this website of mine you're visiting! My older son Daniel, who started my initial charlietuna.com site, built my home studio, taught me everything I know about computers and tech stuff, and is my IT guy I couldn't do radio without, introduced Bryan to a lot of the music and musical instruments too, so much so that Bryan started his own band in high school (LastFalling.com), and Daniel does the recording and mixing of Bryan's band still recording and playing today. You can hear the Bryan clip on the November 3, 2008 "CLIP" archives on this website!
