Charlie,
I just had a laugh I had to share with you. You mentioned that if anyone was going outside today the weather was going to be sunny and 80. I am just happy it got up to 20 today.... I used to live in L.A. 26 years ago and listened to you on other stations and K-Earth.
I'm glad your station is online. Brings back a lot of memories.
To you and the staff. Have a great Year!

Happy 2010 and Ari Stern Received: 12/31/2009 @ 5:55am PST
|
From: Laurie Ackerman
Good morning Charlie, aka our beloved best baseball coach,
We do go along way back to the days of KHJ, my cousin Jack Carney and my cousins Karen and Ari Stern,
You are always a breath of fresh air on the radio. You always bring something new each day to the airwaves. I hope you will consider coming out of semi-retirement and permanently find a home back in morning radio. You simply are the best there is in the business.
However, I would like to share something much richer about you that some people may not know about you as a man, husband, father and coach.
You helped shape the lives of the future of young men when they were blessed to have you as their baseball coach.
I am speaking to you of course about my cousin Ari Stern. He must have been about 10 or 11 years old when he joined your Little League team. Formerly, Ari was told one day by his coach then, that he wouldn't play him because if he did, the team would lose. I am not sure if you knew this story or not?
Our family was so disheartened that a Little League coach would take such a Vince Lombardi approach . Ari was a very enthusiastic boy who loved the game of baseball . His dreams would have been crushed for the love of baseball if it hadn't been for his new coach, Charlie!
My cousin Karen made a brillant move by switching Ari next season to your league. Fortunately, Ari was placed on your team. It was one of the most fun years in Little League for Ari Stern and all of his teammates.
You instilled all of the wonderful values for life. You taught the team to have fun. They always demonstrated great sportmanship, tried their best and their skills improved steadily throughout the year. Most of all Ari loved the game of baseball once again. You helped his sense of confidence and built his self - esteem which in my opinion has carried Ari throughout his life. That is really winning when a coach can do that for his team players.
Over the past few years as I have been able to become re-aquainted with you through K-Earth, I so appreciate your sharing the success of your son Bryan and knowing what a wonderful person you raised on and off the baseball field.
You have accomplished your own field of dreams as both a radio personality, husband, father, and coach.
Charlie, you are voted our MVP for life both on and off the radio waves and Little league field. Of course you know that you could count on me when it came to making sure you were voted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. . My first cousin Jack Carney, who was voted into the Broadcast Hall of Fame postumously in 2001 would be proud to call you his colleague.
I hope you will put into the search engine Ari Stern. You will find him as a postdoctorate in UCSD. He completed his doctorate at Caltech. I know when you see his work , you will feel very proud that the values you emphazied as his coach during his years in Little League paid off for him in life . Ari is happily married to Erica.. My cousin Karen went back to school and is a full time teacher in mathematics at Harvard -Westlake.
As for myself, I am enjoying raising Carly. She is 14 years old. She is a student at The Buckley School. I was blessed at 44 to adopt my blessing from above. Though the teen years are a bit of challenge, I am doing my best . We have a great relationship. It takes lots of work . It is worth every minute of it too. I try to instill good values for Carly too.
Community service is one that our family has always held of great importance. Carly works for Sova which is a food bank. Carly has earned 63 hours working there. My cousin Karen was in charge of Sova when Ari was a student at Stephen S. Wise . Carly is following in the foot steps of cousin Karen by actually working at the Sova food bank.We are keeping the good values in the family tree.
May 2010 bring you great happiness, health and most of all family values that you have always cherished that are near and dear to your heart.

Your show touches me! Received: 12/20/2009 @ 8:50am PST
|
From: Nikole Vergot
Dear Mr. Tuna,
Let me just begin by saying how every time I come across your show on the radio I automatically feel touched. Im not a regular listener but during the Christmas season K-earth is one of the first stations i turn to in the morning.
The reason why i'm sending this email is because just yesterday as i turned on my car i heard...well i dont really know how to describe it but a very beautiful poem if you will about a man who was God and He was talking to his people about how beautiful the season is and how he will always love. This brought me to tears but I didn't get a chance to hear the title. If you could tell me the title and/or play it again on your station that would make my day magical.
Thank you so much and have a wonderful day :)
Nikole

Letter from God Received: 12/17/2009 @ 6:06pm PST
|
From: Joe Hobson
My wife and I heard, for the first time tonight, the song/talk, called "Letter from God". At least thats what we think it was. The DJ on board said the CD was dropped off at KRTH about 14-years ago and the person speaking is anonymous.
How can I get a copy of this song/talk? This is such a very touching recording.
Thanks.

Pride in CA oldies... Received: 12/14/2009 @ 1:55pm PST
|
From: Terry Wilson
Dear Charlie,
I was visiting an uncle up north in Seattle, and I could help but notice they still talking about Paul Revere and the Raiders and even The Wailers (Tall Cool One) after all these years.
Also, I spent some time in New Jersey and heard tri-state radio. Unless one was born there, a number of the bands played from the 1960s, I never heard of! What I did hear was a number of rugged versions of 'The Train Kept A'Rollin'' based on the Yardbirds; none were as good! I even heard modern doo-wop out of New York!
Then I came back to CA again and it struck me that those areas apparently have more pride in what has come from them musically while it seems as scarce as hen's teeth to hear more than national top 40 that seldom can scratch what a native of Los Angeles, like me, remembers.
I am getting more out of the Internet radio than most commercial stations, when it comes to music. Just three weeks ago, as I was shopping in a SFValley art store, I heard some oldies streaming or being played over the intercom. Louie Lymon and the Teencords were among them ones played and others of a mix that let me know it could not be KRTH.
Anyone living in the 1950s and was conscious of radio before the Beatles, knows that there was much more than national rock and roll or soul music being heard or seen. Apparently what KRTH does works; as Muzak. People hear it, but it seems few are really listening or making higher demands for a broader pallet. Now I encounter people in their twenties that have tuned out most commercial radio in favor of the Internet or iPods.
When books like 'Riot on Sunset Strip' by Domenic Priore or the one on 'Roots of Chicano Rock' came out I was surprised by the breadth of music. Most I did not know of. Some, that I did recall, is never and i mean NEVER heard on any commercial oldies station, even though a good number were made in the 1960s.
I wish it were not so, but I too am becoming an Internet refugee as well. Instead of my oldies thirst getting smaller, it has grown and become much more international to include Ska, bossa nova, The Shadows or Cliff Richard...And with the changing demographics and globalisation of the populace in Los Angeles a mammoth opportunity for oldies is probably going to be ignored or shunned again.
Cruise Night, of a couple of years ago, had Brian Burnes hosting and Johnny Tillotson's band performed; the man still has great pipes. But I'll bet his music will be easier heard on-line or in some other country, and not at home. Surf bands were there two, but oldies radio is myopic in that field as well.
It is probably out of your hands. I sure wish more were able to be done with the oldies format than is currently being done. KRTH, to me,is profitable by moribund. It could be almost anywhere and blend in. As a Los Angeles radio station (and I was there when it arrived in 1972 from San Diego), I wish it sounded more like and had some pride in what is unique to this part of the world. After all, not little debt is owed to what has come out of LA music since the 1920s.
Thanks and keep on broadcasting!

SAME CHARLIE TUNA ON AFRTS? Received: 12/09/2009 @ 9:08pm PST
|
From: John Franklin
Sir,
I'm hoping I'm talking to the same personality on AFRTS that I listened to back in Japan from '74 to '76, then again from '83 to '86 and then again from '92 to '95.
I am retired Navy, even though the music changed through the years, you didn't!
I found your URL off of "Navy Together We Served" Web Site. Pretty awesome. Anyway, just wanted to say "Thank You" . We listened to you every day and enjoyed your show.
It did carry me through some trying days. Your contribution to the Military really did/does help!
Again I just wanted to say Thank You. Respectfully, John B. (Rusty) Franklin CTOC ESWS/ASWS (RET)

No Audio Received: 12/06/2009 @ 5:54am PST
|
From: Kevin Cox from Rogersville, MO
(Hey Charlie,
Made a special effort to listen to you (Sunday 12-6-09) this morning. The "online streaming station" is transmitting a "carrier" but there is NO AUDIO. Thought you might want to know.
Later,
Kevin
P.S. used to listen to you on KOIL when I lived in Fremont, NE.
NOTE TO KEVIN: Thanks for the note. Two things, I never worked for KOIL in Omaha...only KGFW in Kearney, my hometown where I started in radio. And there’s no audio during the “Beatles” program block because you’re not allowed to stream programs when there’s more than 3 songs by the same artist within the hour because of copyright laws on music.
I’m on 10 to 3 on Sundays, Los Angeles time....afternoons in the Midwest.)

Where are the real oldies? Received: 12/05/2009 @ 8:25pm PST
|
From: Frank Frawley from Bellflower
Charlie,
Please of all the people you will know how I feel about the oldies. I am a retired military man and have listened to the oldies as long as you have. Please please listen here.
K-Earth 101 is now playing the same stuff over and over again. Where are the real oldies that you and I listened to in the old days. They are on the Sirius channel 5 and 6. When we tune into K-Earth these days it is just not cutting it any more. Are they short on music selection?
We wrote a few years ago and were all told that the music station plays the top popular hits. I mean come on this is the best K-Earth can do? I speak for many people in the communities. We are getting burned out. This is to be the best radio station on earth? Not doing well.

Looking For Work? Received: 12/03/2009 @ 6:53pm PST
|
From: Gus Buckner
Hi Charlie,
A True Solution to Americas Unemployment Problem I just wanted to pass you this information with regard to a "real solution" for the current unemployment situation for all the young Americans that are truly hungry to work, grow and broaden their horizons and be gainfully employed.
With the current employment situation in the US being at an all time high, we at the global work and travel co, would like to assist and let people know about the new working holiday visa that now allows American citizens to work in Australia for up to 1 year, as long as they are between the age of 18-31.
In Australia there is a labour shortage and the wages , even at minimum are twice as much as what is available in America. Minimum wage in Australia is hovering at nearly 15 dollars an hour and with holiday compensation being double time and a half giving a normal minimum wage earner the opportunity to make nearly 45 dollars an hour on Australian holidays!! American citizens ( between the ages of 18-31) can now take an extended holiday in Australia and come home with savings in their pocket.
Please assist me in getting this amazing word to all Americans between the ages of 18-31 that are in need of work. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Gus Buckner gus@globalworkandtravel.net www.globalworkandtravel.com
